چکیده

We have investigated the bimodal distribution of the duration of BATSE gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) by analyzing light curves of 64 ms time resolution. We define the average pulse width of GRBs from the auto-correlation function of GRB profiles. The distribution of the average pulse width of GRBs is bimodal, suggesting that GRBs are composed of long-pulse GRBs and short-pulse GRBs. The average pulse width of long-pulse GRBs appears correlated with the peak flux, consistent with the time dilation effect anticipated from the cosmological origin of GRBs. However, the correlation between the average pulse width and the peak flux for the short-pulse GRBs doesn’t show such a tendency, which needs further study with higher time resolution data.

How common are long gamma-ray bursts in the local Universe?

The two closest Gamma-Ray Bursts so far detected (GRBs 980425 & 060218) were both under-luminous, spectrally soft, long duration bursts with smooth, single-peaked light curves. Only of the order of 100 GRBs have measured redshifts, and there are, for example, 2704 GRBs in the BATSE catalogue alone. It is therefore plausible that other nearby GRBs have been observed but not identified as relativ...

On the Bimodal Distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts

Kouveliotou et al. (1993) recently confirmed that gamma-ray bursts are bimodal in duration. In this paper we compute the statistical properties of the short (≤ 2 s) and long (> 2 s) bursts using a method of analysis that makes no assumption regarding the location of the bursts, whether in the Galaxy or at a cosmological distance. We find the 64 ms channel on BATSE to be more sensitive to short ...

(nasa-tm-111180) the Effects of N96-17700 Pure Density Evolution on the Brightness Distribution of Cosmological Gamma-ray Bursts

In this work, we explore the effects of burst rate density evolution on the observed brightness distribution of cosmological gamma-ray bursts. Although the brightness distribution of gamma-ray bursts observed by the BATSE experiment has been shown to be consistent with a nonevolving source population observed to redshifts of order unity, evolution of some form is likely to be present in the gam...

We present a possible Cepheid-like luminosity estimator for the longduration gamma-ray bursts based on the variability of their light curves. We also present a preliminary application of this luminosity estimator to 907 long-duration bursts from the BATSE catalog.

Peak–energy Distribution of the Νfν Spectrum and Implications for the Jet Structure Models of Gamma–ray Bursts

We study the peak–energy (Ep) distribution of the νFν spectrum of gamma–ray bursts (GRBs) and X–ray flashes (XRFs) with a sample of 37 bursts observed by HETE–2/FREGATE, and discuss its implications for the jet structure models. Combining the observed Ep distribution of HETE–2 GRBs/XRFs with that for BATSE GRBs, we find that the observed Ep distribution for GRBs/XRFs is a bimodal one peaking at...
